
Although paper with printed words is used throughout the collages, the words are often cut off and incomprehensible, not even meant to be understood by the reader. With a color palette in cool and neutral tones, Mora conveys the sadness and struggle of Mary’s life during her time as a slave and in the years following the emancipation proclamation.

The first element that draws the reader into the book is the collage art created by Oge Mora. This book has been recommended to me by various coworkers and teacher friends, so I chose this title for my Texas Bluebonnet category. Mary’s story is simultaneously an inspiration and an indictment of the conditions in which freed slaves were left to survive.

In The Oldest Student: How Mary Walker Learned to Read (2020), author Rita Lorraine Hubbard tells the story of Mary Walker’s life and her perseverance in learning to read at the age of 116.
